Day of Rest
I am a member of a BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) group that is currently studying the book of Genesis. I was originally introduced to BSF in 2001, and I loved participating in the in person bible study with over 100 women in Lincoln. I continued to meet with the group, until my first son was born. Then trying to juggle a full time job, new role as mom and a 100 mile commute each day for work (50 miles each way) was just too much. Luckily I found bible studies closer to home. But because of the in depth study that BSF provided, I always wanted to find a way to get back to BSF.
Last year, I found out they were meeting virtually. It is an international bible study, so you can sign up for the time that works for you and if that group has an opening you become a member of that group and each week you discuss the lesson via zoom. (This all happened before COVID but it was perfect, as I could join from my home on Saturday mornings at 8:00)
This year we are studying the book of Genesis. I feel like I know Genesis pretty well. But, I love when you take an in depth look at a book you think you know. The notes from BSF about Genesis 2:1-3, explains that “God did not rest because he was tired or out of ideas. God rested because His creation was complete and to provide an example for humans to follow.” It goes on to say, “By God’s definition, rest is more than recreation, sleep and mindless entertainment. True rest comes when we cease striving and find peace and contentment in God and His provisions.”
This really spoke to me as many times I can get caught up in all of the “things” I need to do, and think I’m resting when I take a nap. While I did enjoy a good Sunday football nap today, I need to really look at how we as a family practice a day of rest. How can we become more intentional about making time to find rest? What I am learning is I don’t have to plan rest, I need to experience rest. This comes back to my idea of the Third Down Punt. The offense (I) get tired… So I punt during the 3rd down and trust the defense (God) to go in and make the next play. That is how we will find true rest… We don’t hang onto the ball the entire game, but trust the entire team to help win the game.
