Something

Something does not have to mean all or nothing

Something does not have to mean all or nothing

The first two weeks of October I slipped into the old habit of having way too much coffee each day.  On a normal day, I love having a cup of coffee with Steve in the morning before we go out for the day.  And one cup is usually all I need.  But the last two weeks, the weather started getting chilly, and my calendar was packed, so instead of drinking water, I grabbed coffee throughout the entire morning. I knew I needed to stop by noon, so I could sleep, but I still found myself drinking way more coffee than I should.

So yesterday, I decided I needed to quit drinking coffee.  I have done this so many times before, so I know the first day is not bad… The second day (Today) is horrible and by tomorrow I’ll be fine.  At 3:00 I was really close to running over to our local coffee shop… but luckily I made it through the day without any coffee.

I am learning that when I want something - I have had an all or nothing attitude.  I either get results when I start head first - or I quit.  I took my first writing course last year.  It was a 12 week course, and I dove head first into the first 3 weeks - then a roadblock hit, and I got behind, and I could not catch up, and then I got more behind and then I quit and decided I would never have time to write and work full time so nothing happened… No words, no writing.  Done.  (I can’t even count how many diets I’ve had the all or nothing approach with…yikes.)

What I am learning through writing in this blog every day is something as simple as writing a few words every night is a step in the right direction.  As I’m learning this new habit, I know there will be times I take steps in the wrong direction, but those life lessons will teach me something that might help me take 10 steps in the right direction the next day.

Something is something.  And I know that tomorrow, I don’t have to do it all, but I can’t do nothing.  So I will start my day with coffee, and end the day with words… and that is something.
